Elimination of antibiotic contaminants from wastewater using polycarbazole nanocomposites as microwave-activated catalysts

AbstractCiprofloxacin (CIP) is a widely used antibiotic, and its presence in water bodies poses a risk due to its resistance to conventional wastewater treatment processes. The accumulation of such pharmaceuticals can disrupt aquatic ecosystems, harm aquatic life, and contribute to ecological imbalances. Therefore, the degradation of CIP is of immense environmental significance. This study presents the microwave-assisted catalytic degradation of the antibiotic drug CIP using nanocomposites of carbazole copolymerized with pyrrole (PCz-co-PPy) and with thiophene (PCz-co-PTh). The PCz-co-PPy and PCz-co-PTh nanocomposites were synthesized through an ultrasound-assisted method. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized using spectral and morphological analyses. FT-IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy confirmed successful intercalation and copolymerization, while FESEM images revealed a chain-like morphology. These copolymer nanocomposites were employed as microwave-active catalysts for CIP degradation, achieving an optimal degradation efficiency of 95% within 21 min using PCz-co-PPy-50/50 and PCz-co-PTh-50/50 at 600 W microwave power. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with rate constants calculated as 0.031 min−1, 0.020 min−1, 0.030 min−1, 0.056 min−1, and 0.071 min−1 for PCz, PPy, PTh, PCz-co-PPy-50/50, and PCz-co-PTh-50/50 nanocomposites, respectively, for a 50 mg l−1 CIP solution. The catalytic efficiency is attributed to the formation of microwave-induced active species, including hot spots, electrons (e−), holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2−), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Scavenger analysis verified that •OH and •O2− radicals play a crucial role in CIP degradation. A possible degradation mechanism and pathway for the nanocomposite system is proposed.

A green method on dipole solvent as “Activators”: γ-valerolactone/H2O system promoted degradation of ciprofloxacin by ferrate(Ⅵ)

This paper investigates the efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a sustainable γ-valerolactone (GVL) and water (H₂O) mixed system by controlling proton transfer and reducing the self-decay rate of Fe(VI). The kinetic model reveals that the GVL/H₂O system exhibits a rate constant of (9.7 ± 0.7) × 10 M⁻¹ s⁻¹, significantly higher than the (6.8 ± 0.5) × 10 M⁻¹ s⁻¹ observed in pure H₂O. Furthermore, the self-decay rate decreases from (3.1 ± 0.4) × 10⁻² s⁻¹ in H₂O to (1.4 ± 0.2) × 10⁻² s⁻¹ in the GVL/H₂O system. The role of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) in the degradation process was confirmed using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results indicated that GVL could confine water clusters within the range of 1.69-3.68 nm. Density functional theory (DFT) and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the nucleophilic site of CIP in the GVL/H₂O system shifted to the carboxyl group. The toxicity analysis of the degradation products underscored the significance of CIP transfer treatment. This study highlights using the green water treatment agent Fe(VI) and the biodegradable solvent GVL to effectively reduce environmental impact, presenting significant potential for environmental pollution control.

The morphology and structure of zero-valent iron nanosheets promote the activation of persulfate for degradation of ciprofloxacin

Herein, a biochar-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanosheet catalyst (Fe@BC_2-2) for the activation of persulfate to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) was prepared using industrial kraft lignin and Fenton sludge as carbon and iron sources, respectively. Fe@BC_2-2 showed considerably better CIP degradation efficiency (96.9% at 20 mg L^-1) than traditional catalysts. Furthermore, Fe@BC_2-2 exhibited CIP degradation efficiency above 96% in a wide pH range (3-11) and high resistance to interference from various inorganic anions and humic acid even under real water body conditions. The Fe@BC_2-2 catalyst showed good magnetic separation performance and maintained high CIP degradation efficiency (87.0%) after five degradation-regeneration cycles. CIP degradation was facilitated by ZVI nanosheets along with functional groups and defects on the surface of the biochar. As determined through radical-quenching experiments, both radical and non-radical pathways contributed to the degradation of CIP, with the non-radical pathway being dominant, especially with singlet oxygen (¹O₂) as the active species. The degradation pathway of CIP was inferred through the analysis of intermediate products, which showed lower toxicity than CIP. This work not only proposes a strategy for the utilization of traditional kraft pulping lignin and Fenton sludge but also presents an innovative catalyst for the degradation of antibiotics.
