The disbondment that occurs when insulated pipes are subjected to cathodic protection is measured in the laboratory by the so-called crock test, ASTM G-8. An electrochem. technique is described for the determination of the area disbonded by measurement of the double layer capacitance of the wetted surface of the test specimen. Since the disbonded area and the intentional holiday is in contact with the electrolyte, the disbonded area is directly related to the double layer capacitance. The technique is nondestructive, in situ, and determines the area disbonded automatically each day under microprocessor control. Results are presented showing the correlation between the determination of the disbondment by the new technique and by ASTM G-8.
