RESTORES Trial: RESToration Of Rehabilitative Function With Epidural Spinal Stimulation
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), being a devastating diagnosis, has little to no recovery which leads to a long-standing of debilitating impairment for affected patients. The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Neurosurgery team, together with our collaborators, will be embarking on a new clinical pilot trial named RESTORES: RESToration of Rehabilitative function with Epidural Spinal Stimulation. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of electrical stimulation via a spinal cord stimulator (SCS), which will be implanted into the study subjects, and advanced robotic neuro-rehabilitation to aid in improving neurological function in patients diagnosed with chronic SCI. A total of 3 patients, male and female participants, above the age of 21 who have been diagnosed with the condition for more than a year will be recruited for this study over a 2-year period. Rehab sessions will take place pre and post-surgical implant, assessing subject improvements.
Tocotrienols in Parkinson's Disease (PD): A Pilot, Randomised, Placebo-controlled Trial
A study using Parkinson's disease animal model, transgenic fruit flies, demonstrated the potential of using tocotrienols (HOV-12020) as a therapeutic agent for delaying Parkinsonian motor dysfunctions. The proposed study aims to enrol 100 PD patients in a randomized placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effects of tocotrienols (HOV-12020) in motor and non-motor outcomes. Patients will be given oral tocotrienols (400mg/day) or placebo for 104 weeks. They will be assessed using the standard assessments scales in PD at baseline, Week 52 and Week 104. Neuropsychological evaluation will also be completed at these intervals to monitor progression of cognitive impairment (if any). Additional PD staging using MDSUPDRS (Part III), Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) will be conducted at Week 26 and week 78. Blood samples will be collected to evaluate PD biomarkers and for safety monitoring (liver function, renal function and hematology).
Neurodevice Phase I: Wireless Implantable Neurodevice Microsystem for Neuroprosthesis and Neuroscience
This study aims to evaluate the safety of a wireless implantable neurodevice microsystem in tetraplegic patients, as well as the efficacy of the electrodes for long-term recording of neural activities and the successful control of an external device.
