The influences of betaine on chronic alc. fatty liver in SD rats were investigated to provide the evidence for clin. therapy.Seventy SD rats were divided into the solvent control group, model group, Yishanfu capsule control group, and low, moderate and high dosage betaine groups (intragastric administration with 100, 200 and 500 mg/kg betaine for 3 wk).The changes of body weight, feeding, blood biochem. indexes of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total cholesterol (Tch) and triglyceride (TG), liver mass, liver fat content and tissue pathol. were observed and compared in these groups.Betaine at low, moderate and high dosage had protective effects on liver injury in rats with chronic alc. fatty liver and could alleviate hepatic steatosis. It indicated that betaine could significantly decrease the accumulation of fat in hepatocytes of SD rats.
