Evolution of an environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture at CF Industries NH3 manufacturing and distribution facilities is discussed, as are commitments and resources necessary to make it become a reality are discussed. A program is proposed which has worked for the company; program successes and setbacks are presented. Topics covered include: EHS organization (objectives and essential elements, positions and roles, policy and objectives); EHS awareness and implementation (annual assurance letters, performance appraisals, code of conduct, expenditure authorization, leased facilities, corporate crisis management plan, reference materials, EHS management manual, NH3 standard); ensuring success (key elements, signs of progress, other activities); accountability and performance (EHS performance measurement audits, safe work hours, voluntary protection program, Alberta Partnership in Health and Safety, other indications of EHS culture); new initiatives and objectives (changes to EHS audits, increased emphasis on contractor safety, proactive risk management, identifying cause, security); and conclusion.
